Course Description

EMBER™ is a 6-month continuing education program designed for licensed therapists and advanced trainees seeking to deepen clinical effectiveness through nervous system-informed practice.

This course introduces a clinically grounded framework: the therapist’s nervous system as a core variable in treatment outcomes. While traditional training emphasizes interventions and models, EMBER focuses on the therapist’s regulation capacity, attunement, and embodied presence as active ingredients in the therapeutic process.

Drawing from neuroscience, polyvagal-informed perspectives, and emerging research on therapist effects, participants will learn how to assess and expand their own regulation capacity—and apply this awareness to pacing, intervention selection, and client safety.

EMBER integrates functional breathwork (including Conscious Connected Circular Breathwork), interoceptive awareness, and structured reflection tools to support sustainable, ethical, and effective clinical work across presentations, including trauma, anxiety, depression, and addiction.

What You Will Learn

Participants will develop the ability to:

  • Assess therapist nervous system state and its impact on clinical decision-making
  • Differentiate client severity vs. client capacity to guide appropriate interventions
  • Recognize early signs of dysregulation in both therapist and client
  • Apply capacity-based pacing to reduce risk of overwhelm or destabilization
  • Integrate breath-based regulation tools to support therapist presence and endurance
  • Maintain therapeutic containment during emotionally intense or activating sessions
  • Apply regulation-informed strategies within structured modalities (CBT, DBT, CPT, EMDR-informed work)
  • Identify signs of therapist burnout as a clinical and ethical risk factor

Course Structure

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Format: Hybrid (self-paced video modules + live experiential sessions + case consultation)
  • Total CE Credits: 30 CAMFT-approved continuing education units
  • Delivery: Online

Each module includes:

  • Didactic teaching (video lessons)
  • Experiential practices (breathwork + interoceptive awareness)
  • Clinical application and case integration
  • Reflection and capacity-tracking tools

Unique Features

  • Therapist Capacity Framework™ – a structured model for understanding therapist readiness and limits
  • TCAT (Therapist Capacity Assessment Tool) – track and measure capacity across domains
  • ECOS (Ember Client Outcome Scale) – connect therapist capacity to client outcomes
  • Integration of functional breathwork as a clinical support (not a replacement for evidence-based care)
  • Emphasis on ethical pacing, contraindications, and scope of practice

Who This Course Is For

  • Licensed therapists (LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, Psychologists)
  • Associates and advanced trainees under supervision
  • Clinicians working with trauma, high acuity clients, or emotionally intensive caseloads
  • Therapists seeking sustainable, embodied, and regulation-informed clinical practice

Clinical Relevance

This course addresses a critical gap in clinical training:
How the therapist’s internal state directly influences safety, pacing, and outcomes in therapy

Participants will leave with practical tools to:

  • Work more effectively with complex cases
  • Reduce burnout and increase sustainability
  • Enhance attunement and therapeutic presence
  • Improve client outcomes through capacity-aligned care

Continuing Education

EMBER™ is approved for 30 continuing education credits through a CAMFT CEPA provider. Participants must meet attendance and course completion requirements to receive CE certificates.
